Mission Statement Our mission at E. W. Chambliss Elementary School is to work cooperatively with home and community to provide a challenging learning environment where all students can succeed. This is best achieved in a safe, caring atmosphere where students, staff and community demonstrate self-discipline, respect and positive attitudes.

Instructional Highlights: · Students participated in “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) this school year. All students and teachers spent ten minutes daily reading materials for enjoyment to promote and inspire reading. Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign designed to teach students to live drug free was celebrated during October. Students and teachers participated in our “ESD Kickoff” which focuses on and promotes students caught being good and making good choices. Students model positive behaviors and received tiger paws as acknowledgements. Students presented spirited holiday performances showcasing their artistic and musical abilities. Students received “gifts” from the PTPE during December as a way to encourage their sense of sharing and giving during the holiday season. Students shared songs of character as related to Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. during the February PTPE meeting. Students received awards and recognition for honor roll, citizenship, and perfect attendance. Students participated in a school wide Science Fair held in December. Students designed their own science projects. Community workers were the judges of the science fair. The judges worked diligently to identify our first, second, and third place winners. Ms. Christine Wilson, 3rd grade teacher, was selected and recognized as the Chambliss Elementary school teacher of the year and Division level teacher of the year. Ms. Katina Fitzgerald Johnson, 3rd grade teacher, was selected and recognized as Division Technology teacher of the year. Students at Chambliss, with the help of Ms. Harrell, Food Services Supervisor, received the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables grant which provides all children in school with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. A great way of introducing fruits and vegetables as a healthy snack. Teachers allow students to complete activities related to how we get fruits and vegetables. We use technology to assist students in understanding the daily nutritional value of eating fruits and vegetables. Students celebrated Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and Read Across America in March with the assistance of students from Sussex Central High School chapter of Future Educators of America. K-3 students participated in the Readers Make Leaders poster contest. There were 13 contest winners at Chambliss. Two students were the winners of the Links Going Green in the East Poster Art Contest. This contest was sponsored by the Petersburg Links. These two students received recognition by the Sussex County School Board. The Links also awarded a $50.00 check and certificate to the two prize winners. Third grade students in the Gifted program attended a Saturday Academy in March at the Rawls Museum. Students participated in workshops based on Virginia Standards of Learning in Social Studies and Art. The Alternative Governance Committee was organized to guide instructional decisions based on data. This committee provides outside expertise and knowledge in research based instructional strategies. The team observed teachers and students. Feedback, recommendations, and commendations were also shared by the team with principal and teachers. Two Chambliss teachers along with the principal attended Teacher Leadership Training at Christopher Newport in Newport News, Virginia throughout the school year. This training was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education. The program training focused on how to build/develop effective leadership skills in teachers. Instructional strategies, various techniques and approaches were implemented to promote and groom teachers as leaders. The Teacher Leadership Team presented a mini workshop on team building at the instructional teacher retreat held in February. VDOE and Simply Achieve concluded the session with a continued focus on team building and strategies to improve school culture. K – 3 teachers participated in the textbook adoption of a new Reading program. (Scott Foresman) Reading Street is the newly adopted program. |
