Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.  Description:

On a shield shaped embroidered device 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height by 2 13/16 inches (7.14 cm) in width blazoned:  Tierce in pairle reversed, Gules, of the like, and Argent, in dexter chief a scroll of the second and a quill pen Azure; in sinister chief a stylized atomic symbol White detailed Blue, the center voided of the field; in base a lamp flamant of the third; all edged with a 1/16 inch (.16 cm) Blue border.   Attached above the shield, a White scroll inscribed “SUSSEX” in Blue letters edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Blue border.

Symbolism:

Red, white and blue are the school’s colors.  The lamp symbolizes knowledge.  The parchment scroll and quill pen represent academic and scholarly achievement.  The atomic symbol pertains to progress through technology and science.

Background:

The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved 25 January 2007 by the Department of Defense Institute of Heraldry.

JROTC Creed

I am an Army Junior ROTC Cadet.

JROTC COURSE SYLLABUS

COURSE: Leadership Education and Training (LET 1-2-3-4)

INSTRUCTORS: LTC Samuel Petticollas and 1SG TBD

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is offered as part of a four-year program designed to teach students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. This course is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it carries a full elective credit for each year of participation. It provides instruction in Citizenship and American History, Leadership Theory and Application, Earth Science, Character Development, Wellness, Fitness and First Aid, Safety, and Personal Financial Management.

JROTC MISSION: The Army JROTC mission is simply “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” Although the Army sponsors this program, there is no requirement for participants to join the military after graduation. However, cadets who complete two or more years of JROTC may enter the military with advanced rank. Also, cadets of high academic standing are competitive for Senior ROTC college scholarships and appointment to one of the military academics.

COURSE GOALS: This course is designed to teach cadets to:

-Appreciate the ethical values and principles that underlie good citizenship.

-Develop leadership potential, while living and working cooperatively with others.

-Be able to think logically and to communicate effectively with others.

-Appreciate the importance of physical fitness in maintaining good health.

-Become familiar with military history, and understand the history, purpose, and structure of the military services.

-Develop skills necessary to work effectively as a member of a team.

-Understand the importance of high school graduation for a successful future, and learn about college and other advanced education and employment opportunities.

TEXT: Various texts for each topic are provided by the Army.

GRADING: The following criteria will be used to determine grades:

-General knowledge of JROTC topics and performance on examinations

-Discipline

-Uniform wear and upkeep

-Leadership and Drill Performance

-Participation in Team Activities
