Mission Statement The staff at Jefferson Elementary School is committed to provide a safe and orderly environment that fosters knowledge, attitudes, and skills that lead to a healthy and productive life for all students. Instructional Highlights:
· Teachers of the Year! (2010-11) Mrs. Judy Bacote is the 2010-11 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Christie Rawlings is the Technology Teacher of the Year, and Mrs. Andrea Cox is TLT of the Year at Jefferson Elementary School.
· The Bank of Southside Virginia Enhances the Curriculum again this year (2010-11) Mrs. Dorothy Pegram, the branch manager, provided instruction pertaining to the identification of monetary denominations and how it is used in our banking system. Mrs. Pegram was able to show our children a skill that will benefit them in the future.
· Successful SOL Night (2010-11) The Annual SOL Night at Jefferson was a success this school year. The SOL Night and our PTA meeting into one was a huge educational explosion. The parents enjoyed receiving 1st hand knowledge regarding the education their children were receiving at Jefferson Elementary School. · Jamestown Visits Jarratt (2010-11) The Jamestown Foundation brought the cultures of Jamestown to the 3rd Grade students of Jefferson Elementary School. The students were able to internalize many concepts pertaining to Indian and African cultures via the artifacts and stories that were shared with the classes.
· Science Brought to Life! (2010-11) Jefferson Elementary School has created a science lab that incorporates the SOL objectives. The lab was designed as a result of an action-research project developed by Mrs. Ora Briggs and Ms. Janice Poarch as part of their Masters Program in Organizational Leadership. The lab was completed by May 2011 through the great efforts of Mr. Briggs, Mrs. Poarch, and Ms. Ivey to start the 2011-2012 school year.
· Super Job on SOL Scores! 3rd grade students at Jefferson Elementary School scored above 80% in every academic area on SOL testing. We also scored 100% in mathematics.
· Dr. Seuss Celebration The community members and the central office staff members participated in our Annual Read Across America Event. Also several students who were members of the future teachers club of Sussex Central High School were also instrumental in making Dr. Seuss' birthday celebration a success.
