SCPS School Closure for the Year

    March 23, 2020

Dear Sussex County Parents, Students, Faculty and Staff:

Today Governor Northam ordered all School Divisions to be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year. We recognize that this school closure announcement might have come as a surprise to many of our parents, students and staff.  However, we also know that together we will overcome these difficult times.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. James Lane, shared that the Virginia Department of Education will provide guidance to school divisions in the next 24 hours regarding:

    •  Completion of coursework for current classes
    • How to issue standard and verified credits with a focus on differentiated requirements for a 12th grader
    • Graduation updates for seniors
    • Continuity of learning for all students
    • Instructional plans that ensure equity for students with disabilities
    • Continuity of meal distribution to students

Our school division’s staff has already begun to develop plans that will ensure the continuity of education during the extended closure.  Please know that we will update you in the next 24 or 48 hours as to how we will proceed as a school division and as a school family. We anticipate additional details and resources will be available on our division website beginning on March 25th.

As a reminder, we will to continue to provide meals to all students of Sussex County Public Schools. The delivery schedule is available on our website.

Thank you for all that you are doing to support our community’s students.

     Arthur Jarrett, Jr. Ed.

    Division Superintendent
