Pre-Lockdown Drill Notification
April 23, 2026
Dear SCES Community:
At Sussex Central Elementary School, our top priority is the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. We are committed to fostering a safe learning environment for all students and are always looking for ways to improve school security and safety. Therefore, we must practice our emergency and crisis plans throughout the school year by having our faculty, staff, and students participate in fire, tornado, shelter-in-place, and lockdown drills that simulate real-life scenarios.
The state of Virginia requires all public schools to conduct lockdown drills throughout the school year. The state also requires all public schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before performing a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill.
I will continue to keep you informed of safety and security measures in place at our school. If you have questions, please call or contact the school. As always, thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Travis Councill
Principal, Sussex Central Elementary School

We hope to see you in the stands!

We would like to remind you that students will begin Standards of Learning (SOL) testing next week. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the school year.
Please help your child prepare for success by ensuring they:
Get a good night’s sleep
Eat a healthy breakfast
Arrive at school on time each day
Come to school with a positive mindset and ready to do their best
We appreciate your continued support in helping our students succeed. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.
